Certain Sulfates: Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) are surfactants (foaming agents) found extensively in shampoos to create big lather, which most consumers want but typically indicates the product will be more drying. Health Concerns: All surfactants remove natural oils from skin and scalp, which helps clean our hair but also leads to dryness and potential skin irritation. But SLS and SLES are anionic surfactants, which are the harshest and most likely to cause skin irritation. Substantial research has found SLS to be irritating with repeated use, especially for people with skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis (2). Although SLES is more mild than SLS, it is the ethoxylated version of SLS, meaning it’s made with ethylene oxide and thus, also runs the risk of being contaminated with 1,4-dioxane. Environmental Impact: little research exists on the environmental impact of SLS and SLES at current consumer usage rates. A 4oz bottle of texture mist typically lasts me 6-8 months (vs the 2 months I’d get from a typical 4 oz aerosol hairspray can). It’s time to change that. I’ll venture to guess most folks reading this already consider big box pod cleaners toxic because of the ingredients they encase. Remember the “tide pod challenge” that swept social media in 2018, sending many to the hospital? Documented deaths have occurred from people ingesting cleaning pods, leading many to avoid these. But then “green” brands started offering pods with the promise of natural and non-toxic ingredients – inside the pod that is. Understandably, folks were eager to make the switch given the convenience of just tossing a pre-portioned product into their machine. However, the convenience of these products continues to come at a significant environmental cost, largely due to one key ingredient found in the pod casings themselves: polyvinyl alcohol (also listed on ingredient lists as PVA or PVOH). Customers can bring any air-tight container they already have to fill into. Canary’s tabs are also SLS free btw (they use a minimal amount of an alternative surfactant derived from coconuts, not palm) and their full ingredient lists are readily available on their website). She already has the barista fundamentals down, making her own cappuccinos and scratch syrups at home, but she envisions building a place where people can come and create community together. I envision a place where Jasper’s coffee shop can co-exist within our Refillery, and customers can refill beans in coffee cans while also restocking their home cleaning essentials!
